On 11th April, students from the Sanlin Campus' A Level Geography & History course embarked on an enriching walking tour of Shanghai. Shanghai offers a large amount of architectural heritage and cultural stories, making it the perfect classroom for a day of learning.

The Bund

The students arrived at the Bund by ferry and embarked on a day of exploration and education. Standing by the river, facing the iconic buildings of Pudong, students shared presentations describing Shanghai's colonial past and its survival through decades of change, going over many historical buildings such as the Zheng Dan building. Geography enthusiasts pointed out how many buildings with European design contrasts with traditional Chinese architecture.

Shanghai Customs House

Next, the students wandered through the former French Concession, where shikumen (stone-gate) houses and Art Deco buildings stand side by side. At the customs house, the students discussed the historical significance of Shanghai and its modern day importance in trade and cultural exchanges.

Shanghai General Post Building

A highlight of the day was the peer-led presentations. Each student researched a site beforehand, transforming into "tour guides" on location. From the Shanghai general post building to the First Electricity Firm, their talks covered architectural styles, historical milestones, and the interplay between urban spaces and geography.

"Walking through history helps students grasp how geography shapes culture—and vice versa."

南京路

Nanjing Road

A student-led activity was created by Eva Ye of A2A which took the students on a walking tour of manhole covers down Nanjing road engraved with famous landmarks and buildings of Shanghai. Eva had students guess the building and shared historical facts about the origin and heritage of the buildings.

新天地

XinTianDi

The group reflected and concluded their day of studies at XinTianDi. The geography students applied their knowledge of trade, economies of scale, urban renewal and shifting of CBDs to the sight they saw during the day, whereas history students discussed the role of Shanghai in trade and foreign relation, and discuss the role of different neighborhoods in old Shanghai in the context of changing times.

The value of outdoor education lies in promoting students to integrate classroom knowledge with practical experiences outside of the classroom. This hiking activity has enabled students to learn how to capture details from the surrounding environment, from cognition, observation to analysis, and further understand the history, current situation, and future of each object. The process of learning is just like this, starting with curiosity and ending with an exploratory spirit.
