Shekou International School (SIS) proudly hosted its annual IB Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPx) on 15th –16th April, showcasing Grade 5 students’ creativity and critical thinking. Centred on the theme “How We Express Ourselves”, this year’s exhibition highlighted the central idea that “Creative expression can inspire action and change”.

Student-Led
Inquiry in Action

As explained by the PYP Coordinator, Ms. Rebecca Doige, the PYPx is an authentic, student-led process where students explore issues or opportunities of personal significance. Over seven weeks, 25 groups delved into issues aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from environmental conservation to health and equity. Students synthesised their ideas through surveys, interviews, field trips, hands-on tasks, and mentor-guided research, culminating in dynamic presentations featuring interactive displays, 3D models, multilingual posters, and even food samples.

Students reflected on their ongoing growth and taking action. A group researching ocean pollution stated, “We want people to reduce plastic use”. When asked about how they have used ATL skills they responded: “Managing time wisely was a key skill we developed.” Another team focused on literacy shared, “Reading isn’t just for learning—it’s entertainment! Collaboration made our work easier.”

Parents lauded the exhibition’s relevance and depth. A parent shared, “It’s amazing—the children did great teamwork on projects like recycling and gender equality.” Another parent remarked that she was so proud of the students’ hard work, and that the teaching support and student dedication truly shone through.

Fostering Cross-School
Exchange

The exhibition welcomed educators from three IB schools as well as Yucai No.3 primary school, fostering cross-school dialogue and community. Visitors engaged with students, gaining insights into SIS’s innovative approaches to inquiry-based learning and action.

A Testament to
the IB PYP Mission
The exhibition epitomizes the IB PYP’s mission: empowering students to take ownership of their learning and apply skills to real-world challenges. This is a wonderful culmination of the PYP journey and a strong foundation for IB MYP Personal Project and the IB Diploma Programme.
