To celebrate the Year of the Dragon

as well as the successful conclusion of our

first semester of the 2023/24 school year

Harrow Hengqin held a grand

Chinese New Year Celebration

to experience the charm of Chinese culture

and welcome the Spring Festival together

The dragon is one of the twelve Chinese zodiac and is also the most representative and historical totem of Chinese culture. Promoting traditional culture and passing on the national spirit is the best way to welcome the Year of the Dragon. Through this immersive traditional cultural feast, students were not only able to further build up their cultural identity, but also enhance their passion for history, traditions and culture of China. The active participation of Harrow Hengqin's expat teachers also brought different perspectives from various cultural backgrounds and enhanced everyone's cross-cultural communication skills.

Intangible Cultural

Heritage Workshops

Intangible cultural heritage carries the cultural genes and wisdom of the Chinese people. Through experiencing intangible cultural heritage projects, students can have a deeper understanding of their value and significance, and thus cherish and protect these national cultural treasures by heart.

These exciting workshops were also enjoyable for the expat teachers. Even in a school, we saw interesting cultural exchanges between different countries and nationalities, as well as the spirit of openness, respect and inclusiveness that nourishes the world's cultural diversity.

China on Stage

Intangible cultural heritage workshops were in full swing around the school, while the stage was busy preparing for the shows. Traditional Chinese performances, such as Dragon and Lion Dance, Sichuan Opera Face Changing and Acrobatics, were not only highly ornamental performing arts, but also gave audience a sense of the depth and richness of Chinese culture while learning about traditional culture, customs and historical background.

 Lion Dancing

According to historical records, as early as in the Han Dynasty, there was "lion sacrifice" ceremony, which later developed into a folk art form performed during important festivals such as Chinese New Year. The lion dance usually consists of one person playing the head of the lion and one person playing its body. Through exquisite skills and expressive power, the lion's charisma and spirit are expressed to the fullest, with strong visual impact and artistic influence to convey the beliefs and emotions of Chinese culture.

Sichuan Opera Face Changing

It is a traditional performance unique in the Sichuan region, in which the actors can change different masks continuously in an instant, which is mysterious, gorgeous and unpredictable, making people scream. The masks are processed through a special technology, with multiple layers of different colours and patterns, which are quickly changed by the actors through such superb techniques as "wiping", "blowing", "pulling", etc.

Acrobatics

The historical origin of acrobatics can be traced back to more than 2,000 years ago. Acrobats need to practise and challenge their limits repeatedly, representing the Chinese people's ultimate pursuit of physical skills and spiritual sublimation. The performance of "The Monkey King" combined the children's favourite character, Sun Wukong, with a rich and diverse form of acrobatics, with constant surprises and fun.

Each of these performances has its own unique skills and forms of expression, which require not only hard training of the artists, but also the support and encouragement of all to preserve and promote these performing arts and culture.

Hands-on learning was the most impressive experience. A group of Harrow students learnt the basics of the dragon dance techniques and brought the 18-metre-long dragon to life!

In addition, the talented Harrow students also presented special performances for the Chinese New Year. The Harrow Choir sang "Congratulations" as a surprise, and Astral Atlas Band, which has appeared on the stage several times this year, brought "Red Sun", which set off a wave of celebration of the new year in the audience.

A Fashion Show in Chinese Traditional Costume

On the day of the event, not only did the whole school dress up in traditional Chinese costumes, but the stage was also filled with surprises as the parents and children walked in traditional costumes. Many Harrow parents were excited to participate, and the stage was full of warmth and joy. As Chinese people attach great importance to the virtues of kinship and family, the warmth of the fashion show added a sense of home-school celebration.

Special for Today:

The Sounds of Harrow

The celebration once again featured Harrow Hengqin's first original piece of music, "The Sounds of Harrow", which was composed in the traditional Chinese pentatonic scale and played on a blend of eastern and western instruments. Curious about what this piece is all about? Then don't miss the Easter egg at the end of the video recap of the Chinese New Year Celebration!

Chinese Curriculum at Harrow

At Harrow Hengqin, we not only teach the fundamentals of the Chinese language and culture, but also focus on enabling students to learn about and experience Chinese culture in various ways, so that they can improve their language skills and cultural literacy in a holistic manner. In addition to the internationalised curriculum, students will develop a deep understanding and passion for Chinese history, language and culture and become future leaders with Chinese identity and global perspectives.

The Chinese New Year Celebration

enable us to experience

the profound heritage of Chinese culture

We are looking forward to a wonderful new year!
