David

Kelly

Tina

Emma

Curiosity and the desire to learn are intrinsic motivators for children to explore and acquire knowledge on their own initiative. Taking care of children's curiosity during early years can provide them with greater motivation to seek knowledge and explore in the future. A few days ago, Harrow Hengqin Grade 1 students, led by their teachers, went to the National Geographic Ultimate Explorer in Hengqin to explore the wonders of nature and life as little scientists, biologists, explorers and thinkers with a lot of curiosity.

In this learning journey, the Grade 1 students  experienced various programs and explored “the outer space” and “the deep sea”during their learning journey. In the "SAFARI SPEEDWAY, they raced with a variety of wild animals, learning about the running speed of cheetahs, lions, ostriches and other animals; in the "SPACE JUMP", they put on VR glasses and rode on the 4D seats to enter the 360-degree immersive space adventure experience; in the "TERRA STUDIO", they used their own hands to move mountains, create rivers and observe the types of organisms that will appear in different environments. ......

This learning journey was also the beginning of the new science lesson "Animals and their Habitats" for Grad 1 students.

Hengqin National

Geographic Ultimate Explorer

Hengqin National Geographic Ultimate Explorer, authorised by National Geographic, is an interactive experience centre integrating fun, adventure, science and parent-child interaction. It contains rich tour contents and inspiring courses, such as SPACE JUMP, SAFARI SPEEDWAY or ULTIMATE EXPEDITION and nearly fifteen kinds of elaborate multi-media immersive experience projects, which are based on the adventure of nature and science, and bring unique immersive entertainment and learning experience for children through advanced VR and AR and other high-tech interactive equipment.

“Our visit served a dual purpose: to pique the students' interest and to align our learning objectives with real-world experiences. Throughout the day, our students actively participated in various activities designed to enhance their understanding. From identifying different species to comparing their external features, our students were fully immersed.”

The trip was also a unique opportunity for students to explore knowledge in both English and Chinese, enriching their language skills while deepening their understanding of the subject matter.

By the end of this topic, students

will aim to achieve the following learning objectives:

- To identify animals (from humans/plants) and describe the basic things that they need to survive.

- To name a variety of animals that live in water and on land in English & Mandarin.

- To compare and contrast animals according to their external features.

- To use phonetic knowledge to read and write the external parts of an animal in English.

- To label the external parts of an animal in English.

- To identify what a habitat is, and how various habitats differ due to their features.

- To classify animals according to which habitat they live in.

- To identify why animals survive in certain habitats, and not in others.

At the end of the happy journey, the children drew a Story Map based on their own experiences, systematically categorising what they have learnt and forming a clear logical structure.

It was very fun! We watched a cool film and learnt lots of different animals!

David

Kelly

We raced with different animals, there were crocodiles, pangolins, ostriches, cheetahs, hedgehogs, lions ...... The ostrich ran so fast that it ran two laps before we could run one, and we couldn't catch up with it at all; and the hedgehog was so slow that we had run two laps before it finished one!

I saw a lot of marine animals, many of which are nationally protected. But there was also a lot of garbage in the sea, which is not right because the dolphins might eat the garbage and endanger their lives!

Tina

Emma

We travelled into outer space and saw so many little stars!

I found out that pandas are big eaters, they can eat 4 bowls of rice in one meal. No wonder they can grow up to one hundred kilograms!

Angelia

The visit was not only an enriching

and memorable experience,

but also an interpretation of Harrow Hengqin's

 teaching planing of

‘Learning through playing’.

In addition to having fun during the "adventure",

the children were able to build a solid foundation for their upcoming science learning.

By inspiring the children's curiosity

 and desire for knowledge

they will also have unlimited motivation

to explore the world in the future!
