Charlie

Yoni

Joyce

Sophia & Richie

In recent years, many parents have gone abroad to regions such as Thailand, Malaysia and Northern Europe to pursue a high-quality international education. International schools in these regions are affordable, have a great natural environment, and have a stable teaching staff from Europe and the US. Most importantly, schools in these regions have less of a 'rat race' and are more relaxed than international schools in first-tier cities in China.

Is the only way to seek such an educational environment is to travel to another country?

The simple answer is no!

In fact, such possibilities are also available in China. In Hainan with its pleasant climate, Harrow Haikou has created an environment that truly encourages children to explore freely whilst embracing the uniqueness of each child. At Harrow Haikou, you will find a group of parents who share the same educational philosophy forming a community of mutual support. Some of these parents have left first-tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai, whilst some have returned from Europe and the US. Instead of blindly pushing their children to be the best, they hope to find a proper pace for their children's healthy growth.

Q:

Why did you choose Harrow Haikou?

Charlie’s mother:

Charlie's dad and I both graduated from international schools. Our plan for our child was also to choose an international platform with English as the main language of instruction so that our child would have a better understanding of the world in the future. Considering the healthy growth of our child, the quality of teaching, the hardware and software facilities and the future planning, we finally chose Harrow Haikou.

Yoni’s mother

We have lived in Shandong and Beijing and have felt the excessive and fierce competition in education. Through my husband's experience of going from a state-owned enterprise to the United States and starting his own business, we plan to provide our child with an international education. Our family loves Hainan and when my child came to Harrow Haikou to visit the school, he told me firmly, "Mum, I want to go to this school."

Q:

What has been the most profound experience at Harrow Haikou?

Joyce’s mother:

Harrow offers better Chinese cultural activities than a purely Chinese school, such as Super Curriculum Week, which recently allowed students to study Song Dynasty culture in depth. In addition, my child has learnt to think independently, developed more hobbies, gained a lot in academics and extra-curricular activities, and has a goal in Grade 5 - Cambridge University.

Sophia & Richie’s mother:

I am delighted by the confidence, ease, and lack of anxiety that my child feels from within. My daughter was previously a bit timid, more concerned about the attitudes of those around her and not quite able to express her true needs. After a year at Harrow Haikou, she is clearly brave enough to express herself.

International education closest to home

G1 student Charlie's family came to Hainan from Beijing. His mother graduated from the American Film Institute, worked as a director and producer after returning to China, and is now an angel investor focusing on film and television art education. Charlie's parents began their international education in high school.

With so many families moving from Beijing to Hainan due to environmental concerns, Harrow Haikou is probably the closest school in the country that combines a natural environment with a high-quality international education.

Charlie's parents had a good understanding of Harrow when they were still in Beijing. After visiting Harrow Haikou when the school was first established, they learned that many of the teachers there had master's degrees or higher, and that the 1:4 teacher-student ratio and the new facilities and environment immediately attracted Charlie's family.

After coming to Haikou, Charlie has become healthier, and his upper respiratory problems have improved. “Every day when I go out, I see the sky is blue and I feel much happier.”

In the free and inclusive campus at Harrow Haikou, Charlie enjoys making new friends, “When I pick him up after school, I see him interacting with many children, many of whom are not from his class.”

The school provides the children with a wealth of social opportunities. The House System also brings children from different years together and provides opportunities for exchange.

Sometimes parents can get involved and get to know each other even if they are in different grades. “I can ask parents in higher grades for advice on what my child needs to do to prepare for moving up in grade. Charlie's math has improved dramatically this term, thanks to the support of the senior parents.”

In addition, there are lots of home-school events, such as Harrow Ducker, Charity Bazaar and school concerts, allowing parents to know better their children and each other.

Charlie, who started learning English at the age of 3, took the GSE (Global Scale of English) speaking test at the age of 6 and got the best score at the youngest age. This is due to Charlie's parents speaking English with him regularly at home and the high quality of English teaching provided by Harrow Haikou.

This year, the Pre-Prep at Harrow Haikou introduced the Read Write Inc (RWI) Phonics by Oxford University Press - a high-quality phonics programme designed to help children learn to read.

Charlie's class is English-only, and his mother shares her observations on the RWI method: “For example, when learning the word Vegetable, the teacher does not directly ask the child to pronounce the whole word, but breaks it down into three parts (ve-ge-table) to spell it separately, and the child can easily remember the long word and write it down.”

From the international education they experienced in high school, to studying and later working abroad, Charlie's parents' educational philosophy was heavily influenced by multiculturalism.

“Bilingualism is inevitably very important. In my work, I am often exposed to the scripts of films co-produced by Chinese and American and bilingual legal contracts, etc., which need to be read down without barriers. A child must learn to respect different cultures. Because in the context of global cooperation, his future colleagues may be American, French, or British. Such social skills can only be developed in a school with an international background like Harrow Haikou.”

What happens to children who follow their personalities and develop freely?

G1 student Yoni used to attend kindergarten in Shandong, where the large population led to severe over-competition. Her father worked in a state-owned enterprise in his early years, then went to the USA and returned to start his own business. He wanted his child to be able to develop individually according to his interests and therefore chose to take the international route.

Yoni is spunky and outgoing, but she may not fit easily in a public education where obedience and uniformity were prized. Yoni's mother was surprised to find that children at the kindergarten level in Shandong had started attending academic tutoring classes in Chinese, English and Math, which was not what the family wanted.

Considering the excellent climate in Hainan, Yoni's mother brought Yoni to Hainan. After learning about the historical background of Harrow, the academic team and the school’s educational philosophy, the whole family, including Yoni, chose Harrow Haikou.

“I feel a lot of differences here compared to public schools. The children here also have extra-curricular classes, but they are sports, art, creative and other activities that stimulate their internal motivation.”

After less than a year, Yoni's English has improved rapidly with the support of the RWI Programme, “Now she can understand what the foreign teachers say and can communicate with them. She also has a Chinese TA to help her translate when she cannot understand. She reads English picture books at home every day, and the school regroups the classes every six weeks based on the child's English ability. Yoni has moved up three levels in a row, which has given her a lot of confidence.”

Since coming to Harrow Haikou, Yoni's strengths of cheerful personality have also emerged. Yoni has become an active member in school activities, and she was also featured in the school's Mid-Autumn video, giving this child who enjoys expressing herself a bigger stage.

Yoni's parents' educational philosophy of “giving their child the freedom to develop their own personalities” has been realised at Harrow Haikou.

Highlight moments for the children will be the starting point for pursuing further studies in world eliteuniversities

Joyce, a Harrow Haikou founding student now in G5, attended a local private bilingual school before joining Harrow Haikou. Last year she was awarded a full Scholarship of Harrow Haikou Shaftesbury, receiving an A in all subjects for the year. Joyce's mother is a National Grade 1 table tennis player, National Grade 1 table tennis referee, and National Intermediate coach.

Joyce lived in the USA for almost a year before joining Harrow Haikou and spent three months as a transfer student in an American primary school. In her mother's opinion, “Education at Harrow Haikou is basically similar to school in the USA. But school ends at 2:30 p.m. in the USA, but after 4 p.m. at Harrow Haikou, there are extracurricular classes such as music lessons, swimming, and table tennis to enrich the children's after-school lives. There are also English and math enhancement classes to deepen the curriculum.”

It was a surprise to Joyce's mother that she was awarded the Shaftesbury Scholarship.

At first, her mother was not confident about applying for the scholarship, but her teacher saw the merits of her balanced academic and internal development and suggested her mother compile her child's academic and external achievements in recent years and submit them to the school. This has enabled the child to gain a full scholarship. Receiving the scholarship has made Joyce more confident and responsible, and has given her a bigger dream - Cambridge University.

Joyce's mother consulted the school's teachers and after learning a lot about it, she felt that the goal of Cambridge was still possible.

“When you do something, first of all, you have to dare to think about it, and if you dare to think, the school will support you.”

“The school offers lots of opportunities to upper school students that will give extra credit for further education. For example, we recently took part in the Kangaroo Math competition, as well as other international events. In response to the information, the school reminds parents and prepares students for these events. Parents just need to check their emails regularly and register their children.” Harrow Haikou has also become an accredited testing centre for exams such as CAIE, and students can take the exams on campus.

*A competition calendar for parents prepared by Harrow Haikou

Joyce's mother, who is the president of the Haikou Table Tennis Association, also joined hands with the school to introduce a table tennis school programme and invited two famous table tennis players, Fang Bo and Hou Yingchao, to the school.

In addition, Harrow Haikou's swimming lessons also have national level resources. Last month, swimming champion Gao Chang also visited Harrow Haikou's campus and gave swimming training lessons to children.

Harrow Haikou often organises such events, taking children up close and personal with outstanding individuals in various fields. The power of role models will have a long-lasting impact on children's lives, and will be a great boost to their understanding of the world.

A good education is one that teaches children how to live their lives well

「 G5 student Sophia and her brother Richie are both founding students of Harrow Haikou. Their mother is a former news anchor and current news broadcasting teacher at Haikou School of Economics. Their dad graduated from University College London (UCL) and Nanyang Technological University and is now a professional academic. Their mother is against over-pressuring her children and wants to respect their interests to grow up healthy.」

Harrow Haikou retains the Western philosophy of education, which encourages self-expression, individualisation and holistic development of the child. It also incorporates Eastern culture, allowing children to transition naturally in a bilingual cultural environment.

Enjoying a bilingual culture, the children have made great progress in their English language skills. During a recent intensive reading session, the children's mother noticed that her youngest son, Richie, was in a completely different state than when he first started school:

“He can express his understanding of the content fluently with the foreign teacher. This is in line with the student reports I have been given by the school, the tiered teaching provided by Harrow has been very helpful.

I am not anxious about my children being ahead or behind in the rankings. Follow the school's teaching methods and you will naturally see your children's progress.

With a holistic education at Harrow Haikou, Sophia has also gained the ability to think independently and take initiative in her life.

“Now she can convince her dad to exercise more and stay healthy with well-reasoned and logical words; she also can make a detailed and well-thought-out list when signing up for Enrichment Activities classes, prioritising them and working out which ones are preferred and which ones are alternative.

To their mother: “The purpose of education itself is to teach a child how to live this life well, not that it's just about getting into a prestigious school. Having a good mindset, the ability to resist setbacks and the right outlook on life and values is what makes it possible for children to lead a relatively happy life.”

Joyce&Sophia's dance competetion

Harrow Haikou is like a gardener, creating an environment for life, giving enough sunlight, water, and nutrients to allow them to thrive as they were meant to be, believing in the power of the seed to sprout and that everyone has a unique soul.

At Harrow Haikou, there are many more such families who have travelled to Hainan in pursuit of their ideal education. If you ask if it is worth it? These families' experiences are the best answer.
